KNIPEX receives the awards for sustainability and innovation
Cologne/Wuppertal. KNIPEX had two reasons to rejoice at the prize ceremony for the EISEN Awards. In addition to the EISEN CSR* Award for sustainability, the pliers specialist also received the prize for product innovation. This makes KNIPEX the first company in the history of the EISEN awards to have won both prizes.
With the EISEN CSR Award that is awarded at the most important international tools trade fair, the independent expert jury recognises particularly sustainable management and social responsibility. KNIPEX was honoured with this award in 2014, and by winning it once more has underlined the continued advances it has made in the area of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It is the company’s stated objective to turn the matter of “sustainability” from a management issue into something that concerns everyone.
Sustainability at KNIPEX includes global commitment in the fields of the community, ecology and the economy. For example, apprentices are encouraged in areas that go far beyond technical components. Apprentices from all disciplines help run the KNIPEX junior company “KNIPEXFANS” and are given an opportunity to develop entrepreneurial thoughts and actions and take responsibility. Social projects are similarly a fixed part of training at KNIPEX. Employees without qualifications or with different qualifications ae given a chance to complete vocational training within the framework of in-service qualification. Reconciling work and family life is also important. KNIPEX opened its own kindergarten for children aged 1 and above to this end, offering flexible working time models.
Employees also benefit from a wide range of offers including diverse sports activities, regular healthcare opportunities and an inter-company personal development programme.
By 2020, the company’s objective is to reduce the energy required to manufacture each pair of pliers by 20 percent and to reduce the waste occurring during production by 15 percent. Improving ecological stability through reduced CO2 emissions and greater biodiversity is another fixed component of the corporate strategy. To achieve this, KNIPEX generates and uses its own solar power and creates diverse habitats for species of fauna and flora. Regular activities on the subject of “biodiversity” during the school holidays for employees’ children offer special experiences and encourage the next generation to think about sustainability.
With regard to the community, KNIPEX supports projects focusing on education and culture. For example, the company sponsors the “Junior-Uni Wuppertal” university for children and young people, which is unique in Germany. At an international level, the pliers manufacturer has financed the building of a secondary school in Uganda, enabling 80 boys and girls to get a secondary education.
In addition to its performance in the area of CSR, KNIPEX was also able to engender enthusiasm for its innovative force in the product segment. The expert jury at the EISEN Innovation Award awarded the coveted prize to the newly developed KNIPEX 95 62 160 wire rope cutters. With their hinge design (patent pending) and impressive cutting force with a length of only 160 millimetres, the jury was convinced by all aspects of the “lightest and most powerful wire rope cutters in their class”. This was also the second time that KNIPEX succeeded in winning the Innovation Award, the first time being in 2012.
The award ceremony was held on 4th March 2018 during the 2018 International Hardware Fair welcome party.
